ARTIST OF THE MONTH: EMMY DECKER
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO MAKE ART FOR ONE GOOD REASON?
I go to shows all of the time and noticed the One Good Reason booths that were there. I thought it was cool that it was for no tobacco use. I had a friend that was on the One Good Reason team and I wanted to contribute. I also saw on a Facebook ad that there was an artist of the month contest. I support One Good Reason and art for sure. I was super excited to do it!
CAN YOU GIVE US A BRIEF BACKGROUND ON YOURSELF?
I'm 20. I play violin for the band Bearclause. I also play the guitar and ukulele. I'm an artist, obviously. I usually paint oil paintings of scenery and such. I've been a dental assistant for about a year now. I laugh a lot and I'm super awesome.
IS THIS THE FIRST TIME YOUR ART HAS BEEN PICKED UP FOR MASS PRODUCTION? WHAT WILL YOU DO NEXT?
Yes! I'm so happy about it. I want to make some more art and sell it! I've sold one painting when I was in High School.
WHO IS THE MOST IMPRESSIVE PERSON YOU HAVE MET?
My best friend Janeanne Corcuera, she means so much to me. She is the best friend anyone could have. Also the hygienist I work with, Sheri Haskew. She is so funny and sweet.
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE ARTIST, AND WHY HAVE THEY LEFT SUCH A HUGE IMPRESSION ON YOU?
Probably my art teacher Mr. Batt. I love everything he paints. He helped me so much.
WHAT'S YOUR PREFERENCE, HARDCORE, HIPSTER OR BOHEMIAN?
Hipster I guess. I don't really have a certain genre I stick to. I like stuff at Urban Outfitters, American Eagle, and Forever 21. If that helps, haha!
IF YOUR ART COULD CREATE A CURE TO SOMETHING, WHAT WOULD THAT CURE BE?
I would want my art to cure hatred and mean people. I want everyone to be nice and stop being judgmental.
WHAT IS YOUR FIRST MEMORY OF YOU DRAWING?
When I was in 2nd grade, is when I found out I was crazy good at art. I remember I had a Winnie the Pooh coloring book, and I had the idea to look at one of the pictures in it, and draw it on a separate piece of paper. No tracing involved. Tracing is totally cheating. I looked exactly the same. It was of Tigger!
WHAT IS THE BEST MEDIUM TO SHARE YOUR ART; WALL, SHIRT, MUSEUM, MUSIC ALBUM COVER?
All of the above. My band Bearclause makes the art for our album covers. I hang my paintings on my wall, I now get to have my art on a shirt! I have also had my art in art shows.
WHAT MUSIC HAVE YOU BEEN LISTENING TO LATELY?
Lots of Beach House, Angus and Julia Stone, M83, Sufjan Stevens, The Decemberists, The Naked and Famous, Local Natives, and much, much more.
WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN TEN YEARS?
Married to a very sexy man, having some kids, and still playing music and painting.
WHAT'S YOUR ONE GOOD REASON TO LIVE TOBACCO-FREE?
I want to be healthy. Not full of disgusting tobacco! I don't want to turn into that lady with the hole in her throat on those "no smoking" commercials. I wouldn't be able eat or drink without it coming out of my throat all over my clothes! I know that tobacco has ruined many lives. It is just not a good thing. Tobacco is bad, mmmmk?
IF YOU HAD TEN MINUTES WITH THE CEO OF A TOBACCO COMPANY, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?
I would sit there and give him/her a disgusted look, shake my head back and forth then say, "Really?"
